Broad Channel Bits (The WAVE)

Broad Channel Bits

By Dan Guarino
It’s been a cold winter, no doubt. So much so that a lot people’s cabin fever broke last week Sunday, as temperatures rose from the single digits to the upper 30s. It was a nice day. It didn’t last, but it was a nice day.
The Broad Channel Civic Association Facebook page has some amazing photos of a very frozen Jamaica Bay. As you may have seen, the cold this winter has been so severe that almost all of the bay was frozen over. So people say they have never seen anything quite like it.
But the images are stunning, especially the views ofBroad Channel from a distance. The photographer? Dan Mundy Jr.
Dan noted in the last Civic newsletter, “Record setting cold has gripped the area and Broad Channel is in a DEEP FREEZE with ice covering the entire bay. Hopefully spring is around the corner as this extreme cold seems to be taking a toll on water pipes, oil burners and even dock poles that are being snapped like tooth picks by the massive ice flow.”
Looking to spring, there are still a few dates left to sign up for BCAC CYO St. Virgilius/St. Camillus/St. Rose soccer. You can register on Saturday, Feb. 28, and Sunday, March 1, from 1 to 3 p.m. and Wednesday, March 4 and 11 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. New players are welcome and no experience necessary.
Fees are $85 or $110 with a new uniform. Sign up at the BCAC Clubhouse at Memorial Field at 125 Cross Bay Blvd. The girls’ teams from 1st to 8th grades, and boys are first through eighth grade, pending registration results. Email rchurchill3@gmail.com for more info.
This Saturday, Feb. 28, is the 110th Anniversary Dance for the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department. It’s a great evening and it’s an important fundraiser for the Vollies.
Here’s what they have to say about the big event: “The BCVFD is celebrating 110 years of service at this upcoming year’s Officers Installation Dance. As usual, we will be giving out awards such as the Chief Robert H. Russell Sr. Memorial Firefighter of the Year Award and Lt. Kenneth Greenholtz Sr. Memorial EMT of the Year Award, as well as installing our new chiefs and officers for 2015. This year’s Master of Ceremonies will be the 2014 Chief of Department Ed Wilmarth III. Please join us, and other departments, in celebrating at the American Legion with food, drinks and dancing. Call 718-474- 6888 weeknights between 7 and 10 p.m. for your tickets and reservations, because space and tables do go fast. Last minute tickets may be available at the door the night of the event.”
I believe you can still get in on the BCVFD 3rd Annual Getaway Raffle, which has a of an overnight stay at 5 star hotel, dinner in a fine restaurant and Broadway show tickets as the grand prize. And you pick the dates you want to go.
Get your foot in the door or climb in over the transom, but get in on this raffle. You don’t want to ‘just miss’ being the winner!
There is also just enough time, but not much, to sign up for the new Defensive Driving Class. The 6 hour class takes place over two Tuesday nights, March 3 and 10, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the St. Camillus School Auditorium, 185 Beach 99th St. Attending both nights and completing the class will get you a 10 percent insurance discount, good for the next three years, and take up to 4 points off your license. Refreshments will be served. No test is given. Proceeds go to support the St. Camillus CCD Religious Instruction Program. Your $45 payment now guarantees you a seat. Call Helen at 917-553-2409 or 718-9454648 now as time is running short.
On Thursday, March 5, the BC Library is hosting “Do You Have Happy Feet?” A registered nurse will be giving a presentation on foot health “so your feet can be happy!” Get your skates on and come down.
Many thanks to those who came out to the VFW Hall for the Property Tax Assistance town hall meeting arranged by Councilman Eric Ulrich for Monday, Feb. 23.
Likewise thanks to everyone who joined in for a fun Paint Nite at the BCAC Clubhouse last Thursday, Feb. 26. Talented Jennifer Porcheddu from right here in the Channel led the event and all proceeds went to Relay For Life and their fight against cancer.
Speaking of good causes, Kristen Kim, along with Mason Poretto, organized the recent successful Rock for LLS event at Grassy’s. The event, which featured local musicians, raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Kristen writes, “Hey everyone! Since I'm doing so well, LLS raised my fundraising goal to $3000. I have until March 1. Who's going to help me reach my goal?!!! If you're not in a position to donate, then please share my Facebook fundraising page. I've always wanted to run a marathon. Not only am I running my first half marathon in March, but I am part of a team I am training with, to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.” Help if you can.
Pick up a brand new 2015 BC Historical Calendar today. Buy one month for $5 and get the other 11 also! There are great historical photos and high tide times for every day. Calendars are available at All American Deli, Rock N Roll Bagel, at BC Civic meetings, and from BC Historical Committee members, like me!
Finally, it was four years ago this past Wednesday, Feb. 25, that my wife Liz passed away. Her last Broad Channel Bits column was published on the day that she died. I think she would have been proud of that. She loved Broad Channel.
I wanted to thank everyone for their support since then, and thank you for welcoming us into this wonderful community some 25 years ago.
Thanks for reading.
