The Winter Solstice, signalling the start of our astronomical winter season, will occur tomorrow (Sunday) evening at 6:03 pm as the arc of our sun's travel across our sky stops moving southward.
Because the sun's arc of travel will be as far south as it can get in the sky, Sunday will be our shortest day of the year with 9 hours and 15 minutes of daylight. Conversely, Sunday will also bring our longest night of the year with 15 hours and 45 minutes of darkness.
At this time of year, noontime shadows will be the longest of the entire year.
Starting Monday, December 22nd, the sun's arc of travel will begin to reverse it track in the sky and start to move northward once again and our days will start to become longer and our nights shorter.
