Cell phone violations were the biggest reason police in the 100th Precinct pulled over drivers in the month of October. The 69 violations in the single month bring the total to 433 for the year. The 101st Precinct gave out 70 tickets for cell phone violations, bringing the total to 601 for the year so far. These stats were recorded before even harsher cell phone violation punishments took effect on November 1. New drivers with a probationary license, Class DJ, Class MJ or a learner permit can have their license suspended for 120 days if caught using a phone. The maximum fines for all drivers have also increased. A first offense can cost up to $200, a second can cost up to $250 and a third can cost up to $450. Drivers can be punished for something as simple as looking at a cell phone while it is in your hand, even if you’re not using it to transfer messages.

The Rockaway Theatre Company is hosting The Theater of War: Soldiers & Citizens Tour on Saturday, December 6th. Two actors, Zach Grenier (seen regularly on The Good Wife) and Marin Ireland (seen in Homeland) will present dramatic readings of Sophocles’ Ajax — an ancient Greek tragedy about the suicide of a great, respected warrior. The presentations, the producers say, are “intended to foster understanding and compassion, while mobilizing citizens and resources to help improve the lives of service members, veterans, and their families and communities.” Tickets are free but seating is limited.
