President’s Message

Our next Civic meeting is on Thursday, December 4th at 7 PM at the VFW Hall. We will be holding elections for the Civic board for the coming year.

Hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving and now that we are well into the Holiday Season it must be said that the Christmas Lightson the Boulevard look great!!  Stephanie Wagner has done an outstanding job in undertaking this huge fundraising effort for what is now a third year!  This is a very large and intense effort that involves organizing numerous raffles as well as running a benefit party at the Bungalow Bar.  The results are awesome and truly set our town apart as you drive in at night and see the lights shining!!

I want to thank Assemblyman Goldfeder for pushing the Port Authority to finally place an airplane noise monitor on our islandWe are the only neighborhood that is adjacent to the airport that does not have such a monitor and as the Port Authority and the FAA move forward with a mandated 150 noise study and are looking at redesigning flight paths.  It is critical that we are able to measure the impact of the increased flights on our neighborhood.  A “big” thanks to Tom Harnisher for allowing us to use his property to place the monitor. The monitor should be up and running by January and you can monitor the live data that it produces as well as see all air traffic out of JFK online at this website --http://webtrak5.bksv.com/panynj4.

On November 7th the Civic Association met at Councilman Ulrich's office with NYC Parks Department to discuss the vacant lots that have been identified by the community as valuable open spaces that have critical wetlands value and that we have been requesting to be taken over by NYC Parks.  The councilman has been very helpful in pushing Parks to take over these lots and we expect to hear back from them shortly after their onsite reviews are completed.

On Wednesday, November 26th the Civic Association met in Manhattan at the Build It Back headquarters with representatives of the NYC Department of Buildings, Architects, Councilman Ulrich, Assemblyman Goldfeder, the NYC Fire Department, and Build it Back Reps.. The meeting was put together by Dan Brown of Borough President Melinda Katz's office. Dan and the Borough President’s office have been doing a fantastic job of trying to address the numerous problems that have arisen within the Build it Back Program. The meeting was very productive and I am hopeful that we will see some changes in position on the part of NYC Buildings and also a greater sense of urgency in that agency, in terms of expediting the permits that have been, and will be, submitted by those seeking to rebuild or elevate.  Again, I want to thank both Councilman Ulrich and Assemblyman Goldfeder for traveling into Manhattan on the day before Thanksgiving, in miserable weather, in order to support us and to push for our positions.  We are fortunate to have such involved and responsive elected officials!

Natalie Grant has done a fantastic job as editor of our newsletter and has now created the Civics own website. You can visit the site at --http://broadchannelcivic.org/.  The site will see additional information and photos soon, and if you have any ideas for it that you would like to suggest email Natalie at najomawi@gmail.com.
