Broad Channel Bits

By Dan Guarino

Sometime on Turkey Day last week, I was swinging the big bird into the passenger seat of my car. At twenty pounds it was more like a bowling ball with wings. I had a brief self-debate as to whether to seatbelt it in or not. (I could imagine the traffic stop.)
As I looked up I saw a woman in a turquoise, green and white windbreaker, ear covering headband and gloves, swiftly jogging down the other side of Cross Bay Boulevard. She was smiling.
I thought, “She’s doing exactly what she wants to do to celebrate and enjoy today.”
Thanksgiving must be contagious, because I smiled, too. So what else is going on around town?
Well, on Friday night, Dec. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 6, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. will be the Annual Craft and Christmas Gift Sale at the American Legion Hall. The Hall is a 209 Cross Bay Blvd. Discerning shoppers from both sides of the bridges to Broad Channel are welcome. That means you, RockawayHoward BeachHamilton Beach and beyond.
Hosted by the Broad Channel Crafters and the American Legion Auxiliary this will be the 26th year for this event. There will be homemade jewelry, ornaments, baked goods, raffles, seasonal decorations and items and more. The Legion kitchen will be open to sell hot soup, chili, hot dogs and knishes and more. All proceeds go to the Wounded Warriors Project.
Also on Saturday, Dec. 6, you can catch up with a great holiday shopping trip to Tanger Outlets in Riverhead N.Y. The pickup is at 7 a.m. at the BCAC Memorial Filed on Cross Bay Boulevard. Coming back the bus will leave Tanger Outlet at 5 p.m. The $35 per person ticket includes round trip transportation, a Tanger Outlet Coupon Book, breakfast, snacks and cash door prizes. Reserve your spot now by contacting Michelle at 917-572-7643 or mlj0916@yahoo.com.
This event is being organized by Relay for Life’s Team DOMinators right here in the Channel. All proceeds benefit Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.
Can’t decide whether to shop local or go farther afield. Why not do both? You can browse and buy at the Legion Hall on Friday night, then bus it to Riverhead on Saturday morning.
By the way, about the Relay for Life being planned for Broad Channel, Jamie Pisani writes, “It’s on May 16th at the BCAC. We are trying to get teams to sign up before January so they can participate in upcoming fundraisers and team events.”
Go to www.relayforlife.org, where it says “Sign Up For An Event” type in ‘Broad Channel’. If you click on “Relay For Life of Broad Channel Breezy and Rockaways - Broad Channel, NY,” it will tell you everything you need to know. Also check them out on Facebook.
Yes, the new Broad Channel Historical Society 2015 Calendars are out. You not only get a great rarely seen view of the Channel on the cover, but you also get 12 months’ worth of enjoyable vintage pictures. And you get the tide times for the whole year. You may not be a boater or a fisherman. But you’ll sure want to know when to move your car ahead of the high tide.
Calendars are available at Rock N Roll Bagels and All American Channel Market. Still only $5 each and they make great gifts.
The aerial photo on the cover, a print of which was given as the door prize at the BC Historical Day, was taken by my friend, the talented exhibiting photographer and Rockaway Artists Alliance board member, John Grillo.
The American Littoral Society, whose Northeast Chapter is based right here in BC, is having a party. On Saturday, Dec. 13, their having their annual fundraiser and holiday party at the American Legion Hall from 5 to 9 p.m. There will be a buffet dinner, drinks, entertainment, raffles and a Silent Auction and an Ugly Auction. As a fundraiser, tickets are $75 for adults and $35 for kids under 16. As the Littoral Society notes, “Your support helps the American Littoral Society’s Northeast Chapter continue our work preserving and protecting our coastal communities, work that began in 1982 by Chapter Director Don Riepe. These funds go directly to support our ongoing programs: The Marsh Restoration Initiative, Jamaica Bay Guardian, New York State Beach Cleanup and Operation Cleansweep. A special thank you to all of the volunteers, community members, partners and funders who helped us in our mission this past year.”
You may have seen the white bus lined up outside on Shad Creek Road last week Sunday, Nov. 23. Inside Broad Channel VFW Post #260 hosted its annual Thanksgiving dinner for special guests from the St. Albans Veterans Hospital. Our hardworking volunteers served up a full afternoon of music, entertainment and hot cooked food. Oh, there were lots of smiles, too!
Dorothy Fraher recently sent me a great aerial photo of BC’s west side, probably taken in the 1950s or ‘60s. You can not only see the canals, but also the Broad Channel Day Camp in full. I’ll be looking to share that picture with you soon.
The holiday lights are up over Cross Bay Boulevard and they really brighten up the town.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the Broad Channel Christmas Lights 2014 raffle. The drawing was set for last Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Bungalow Bar. Big congratulations to the winners!
Donations are still being accepted! Whatever is above what’s needed for this year will go for next year. You can go to www.gofundme.com/BClights to add what you can. Finally, I get to take many more pictures at events than can possibly fit in The Wave. So I was happy recently to share a disc of the Legion’s 2013 and 2014 Halloween parties, one of the Vollies Children’s Halloween Parade this year and some individual shots with neighbors!
