W12thRd
Sunday
November 9th, 2014
On Friday, November 7th, we were personally advised by a Con Ed staff person that Con Ed would be working on W12th Road during the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, November 8th and 9th, between the hours of 6 am and 6 pm.
At that time, in response to an inquiry about any parking restrictions that might be necessary to accommodate this weekend work and also if the work would entail any loss of power to any or all homes on W12thRd, we were simply told "I don't think so."
Based on our discussion with the ConEd staff person and the information contained in the printed advisory, we also published a post simply advising all W12thRd residents that ConEd would be present and working on the street throughout the weekend again withiout mention of any parking restrictions or possible loss of service.
On Saturday, November 8th, several large ConEd bucket service trucks were present on W12thRd
and problems arose when residents, who had not been advised to park off site, attempted to ingress and egress the block with their personal vehicles.
Consequently, late Saturday afternoon, November 8th, a printed flyer simply stating "No Parking on W12thRd Saturday November 8th and Sunday, November 9th" was suddenly delivered to each home on W12thRd. Many residents expressed annoyance that they had not been afforded the courtesy of advance notice of this parking prohibition over a weekend.
On Sunday, November 9th, electrical service to W12thRd homes was interrupted by ConEd without prior notice around 11 am and remained off until approximately 1 pm. Again, many residents expressed annoyance that they had not been afforded the courtesy of advance notice of this service interruption. There was one instance of a resident who suffers from severe asthma who was unable to utilize their nebulizer because of the temporary unannounced power outage.
Note to ConEd
Killing all parking midway through the weekend and then turning off all the lights without prior notice on Sunday does not speak well of your intent to maintain an open line of communication with your customers on W12thRd.
A little prior planning and forethought on the part of management would have resulted in communication to all W12thRd residents in advance of the weekend work requesting that:
1, We not park on the street during hours of scheduled work...
and, more importantly,
2. That some temporary power interruption should be expected.
The residents of West 12th Road are willing to work with any agency, service provider or contractor
during this project, we simply request that we be kept in the loop to avoid surprises.
