Broad Channel Bits

By Dan Guarino

Hang onto your hats, Broad Channel. Actually, with the way the wind has been blowing this past week, you may want to hang on to your house, your car or the nearest telephone pole. It would be a good idea to keep a firm grip on children and small pets, too. Whew! That’s some wind.
What a blowout the American Legion Halloween party was last Saturday night! Attendees included the Flintstones, a lively couple of Raccoons, Ralph and Alice Kramden (perfectly in character!), pirates, devils, superheroes, the Raisin Choir, yellow Minions, ghouls, E.T. and friend (complete with bicycle), a young lady in a fantastic full fish costume and a colorful riot of other characters. Even Joan Rivers (who I spotted in the men’s room), Anne B. Davis (the Brady Bunch’s Alice), and Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire came as the Dead Celebrities Society. Everyone deserves a very honorable mention. It looked likely that most of the town was packed into the Legion Hall. The music, from DJ’s@Work, ran the gamut and everyone pretty much danced to everything.
Mixed in with all the dancing and the fun, I had a great conversation with George Barr. He pointed out “Where else can you see younger people, their parents and their grandparents all coming out and having a good time together?”
The evening ended with everyone on their feet, not only dancing but appropriately singing to I’ve Had The Time of My Life. Then everyone joined in with Kate Smith for a full spirited God Bless America.
Only in Broad Channel.
This Sunday, Nov. 9, there will be a Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. for all who were buried from St. Virgilius Church. A Memorial Mass for St. Camillus will be held on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 12 Noon.
Running over three Sundays, Nov. 9, 16 and 23, there will be a free NYS Boating Course for ages 10 to 18, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in St. Camillus’s Springman Hall, 180 Beach 100th St. Space is limited, so contact them now.
Next weekend, you can do the entire 6-Hour Defensive
Driving course in one day. On Saturday, Nov. 15, the class will be given from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s right over the bridge at St. Camillus Catholic Academy auditorium, 185 Beach 99th St.
Taking the course will get you a 10 percent discount on your car insurance for the next three years. It will also take four points off your license. It’s a good investment for $45 and your payment now guarantees you a seat. There are no tests and there’s even a lunch break. Call Helen at 917-553-2409 or 718-945-4648 now. Proceeds help benefit the St. Camillus-St. Virgilius Religious Instruction (CCD) Program.
Get your knife and fork ready. There’s an American Legion Brunch right around the corner, coming up on Sunday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There’ll be eggs, pancakes, omelets, bacon, ham, fried potatoes, rolls, hot coffee, juice, dessert and more. You can’t beat the company either. People come out with their kids and families and get to meet up with friends and neighbors or meet new friends.
The American Legion Hall is at 209 Cross Bay Blvd. You know, you also don’t have to be from Broad Channel to enjoy. Come on over the bridge. All are welcome and proceeds will go towards the Children’s Christmas Party. Oh, there will also be a Legion Auxiliary meeting on Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m.
Broad Channel’s own Gary Russo sang at the start of the NYC Marathon this past Sunday, Nov 2. Actually he ended up singing at the four different race starts that windy day, and boy, does he have some stories to tell!
Any benefit from Build It Back or any other city program is certainly welcome in Broad Channel andRockaway. However did anyone notice that East 12th Road, where Mayor de Blasio gave a press conference touting the administration’s gains, is clearly marked “Dead End” on both corners?
The VFW Ladies Auxiliary will throw their Children’s Christmas Party on Dec. 21. Shopping and preparations will commence for it well beforehand. Thanks, Ladies.
This week Broad Channel says goodbye to Gertrude Connolly, age 97, who was living in Rosendale in upstate New York. Described as ‘one of the original Broad Channelers’, she will be missed by her family, many friends and her community.
BC Vollies Chief Ed Wilmarth III writes “On Saturday, Nov. 15 at 12 noon, the BCVFD will be presenting the 2014 Fund Drive donation check to Susan G. Komen CEO Linda Tantawi at the firehouse on Noel Road. The BCVFD had been collecting from May until October. And it’s not too late to drop off or mail your fund drive donation for 2014. We will also come pick it up if you like.”
“We would like as many residents to join us at the firehouse for this special occasion as it was your donations that made this possible. The BCVFD and the town received such an outpouring of donations and support from other not-for-profits after Hurricane Sandy that we decided we would pay that kindness forward. Please spread the word.”
Here’s a gem at the BC Library that you might want to pick up. It’s called Toy Time by Christopher Byrne. In it, you will find a quick reading fun roundup of toy box favorites like Alarm Clock, the Easy Bake Oven, Barbie, GI Joe, Uncle Milton’s Ant Farm, Silly Putty, Major Matt Mason and more. There are even now obscure favorites like the Johnny Reb Cannon, which provided one of my colleagues at The Wave with hours of projectile fun. Stop in and check it out.
Don’t be left out of the $5,000 Giveaway Raffle. With the drawing coming up on Nov. 22, the $50 tickets are going fast for the nearly $10,000 in prizes. And only 400 tickets will be sold. So it doesn’t pay to be number 401! All proceeds go to Broad Channel Christmas Lights 2014. Stephanie Wagner started this effort to get holiday lights all up and down Cross Bay Boulevard in Broad Channel just after the hurricane. Donations are also accepted at www.gofundme.com/bclights.
Thanks for reading
