We hate to steal his thunder but we’ve to highlight another classic from Peter Mahon’s Between The Bridges column. As usual, the classic line comes from his now-97 year old mother. He writes about Hillebrand’s, “While visiting her grandchildren in Broad Channel she was always intrigued with the funeral home’s corner building on E14th with the big “Dead End” sign on the corner. Every time she passed it she would remark, “Now that’s truth in advertising.”

Another columnist, Alex Karinsky, deserves some kudos. His story on the boogie board ban was the most viewed story ever on rockawaytimes.com topping the Anthony Weiner story about him looking to open a kitchen in Rockaway. We got comments on the boogie board ban from far and wide, including Australia.

There is a primary race on Tuesday. State Senator James Sanders faces a challenger, Everly Brown of Rosedale. Brown’s campaign website says he is an active member in the Rosedale community, not much else.

A man remains missing after going in the water at Beach 9th Street late Sunday night. It was dark and the ocean was rough causing some to speculate that it was suicide attempt.

The Gulf Station which closed in the middle of the night a few weeks ago will reopen. Don’t look for the Subway sandwich shop or Krispy Kremes. They won’t be back. At least not yet.

When visitors head home late at night or early morning they are often surprised to see so many people on bicycles. The Rockaway bars – from the Sugar Bowl to the Rockaway Beach Club – have full bike racks almost every summer night. Made us wonder if Rockaway is unique in this way. Where else is there a 5 mile span where bikes are used for bar hopping?

September is chock full of things to do. The 10th Annual Richie Allen Memorial Surf Classic is Saturday, September 7th at Beach 97th Street in front of the concessions. Signup is at 8 a.m. for surfers entering the contest. The “paddle out” to remember Richie who gave his life on 9/11 takes place at 3 p.m. The day is not just for surfers. It’s magnet for seeing old friends and making new ones.

Restaurant Row on the Boulevard looks to be blossoming further. A coffee shop, Rockaway Roasters, is opening and a sign for a Chinese Restaurant (a sit down place) is posted in a window off Beach 92nd Street.

Ferry advocates have been amazing. We’re foolishly optimistic enough to believe the ferry will get extended somehow. But what’s with Seastreak the company that runs the ferry? They do a great job on the water but they could have done some advocating as well. They never even put up a sign at Beach 108th Street. Never put up a sign at Pier 11 either. Can’t understand why Seastreak did its best to keep the ferry a secret.

The de Blasio administration issued a press release about its great progress with Build It Back. Many other elected officials were quoted offering their praise. But not Phil Goldfeder. In a separate article, our assemblyman said “There are over 7,000 Build it Back applications throughout my assembly district and if (all we’re at) is 500 that doesn’t even scratch the surface of helping enough families recover,” he said.
