“Tidal Street flooding will take place…(with this) evening’s 8.0 foot high tide at 9:30 p.m. and with tomorrow morning’s 6.9 foot high tide at 9:54 a.m.,” noted Broad Channel resident Pete Mahon on his blog on Tuesday, Sept 9.
Due to the full moon — dubbed the “Harvest Moon” — being closer to the Earth, it brought unusually higher tides in theBroad Channel/Rockaway area.
While street flooding is common on specific streets in Broad Channel all year round, residents of the island community were taking extra precautions during this time. As noted in a bulletin issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), “a coastal flood advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.”
Following Mahon’s West 12th Road Block Association blog’s advice to “make sure your cars are... safely on higher ground,” close to one hundred cars were parked on the median strip along Cross Bay Boulevard.
Meanwhile road crews milling and repaving previously Sandy-damaged streets continued their work despite the rising tide.
In some places street sweeping equipment pushed back the water.
Separately, work is underway to raise and redesign West 11th, 12th and 13th roads as part of a flood mitigation project initiated before Hurricane Sandy.
