Hundreds turned out along Cross Bay Boulevard on Labor Day, Sept. 1, to catch the annual Broad Channel Mardi Gras Parade.
Led by American Legion Post 1404’s color guard, the parade stepped off at 1 p.m. from in front of the Ruffle Bar.
This year, parade watchers were treated to a rolling revel of boxers, lobsters, boats, bears, a steamroller, a dancing gospel choir, cartoon minions and more. Adding to the mix were Councilman Eric Ulrich, Assemblyman Philip Goldfeder and a group of perennial parading pirates. The Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department, affectionately known as the Vollies, followed up and several of their engines and trucks were spaced throughout the line of marchers.
The parade first headed southward along the west side of the island community. At the Grassy Point Bar and Grill the contingent swung around and marched up the east side of town.
As is traditional in Broad Channel, people hauled chairs, coolers and children across the boulevard to catch the parade in both directions.
Celebrated for more than a century, the BC Mardi Gras parade caps off a yearly summer long contest where individuals and groups host imaginative and fun filled events and compete to raise funds for local causes. All proceeds this year go to theBroad Channel Volunteer Fire Department.
Crowds gathered at the Broad Channel Athletic Club Memorial Field for a post-parade party and the announcement of the winners in various float categories.
