Broad Channel Bits

By Dan Guarino
A few months ago, someone over on the east side pointed out a swan’s nest in the reeds on the edge of the bay. As we watched, a pair of soon-to-be swan parents took turns sitting on the nest, while the other took to the water looking for food.
The people I was with asked me not to disclose the location. “People will come and disturb the nest and the eggs,” they said. That information has been safe with me.
Sometime later I stepped out of my front door and onto the deck, as I often do, to spend some time withJamaica Bay. I noticed a pair of swans paddling away by the shore.
I brought out my camera and pointed. When I zoomed in what came into focus was a set of small baby swans swimming along between the two big ones. I guess the eggs from that well-tended nest had hatched.
Just this past weekend I stepped out the door and there were the two swans. The ‘babies,’ grayish brown, were now bigger, but still in line between mom and dad.
As I watched my new neighbors, I thought “I guess Broad Channel has just welcomed another family.”
I don’t know the whole story yet, but it looks like the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW had a great time aboard the Captain Mike on Sunday. That’s certainly how it looks in the photos they sent. Is that the ladies from the American Legion in there, too? Either way, it’s nice to see these women who volunteer and give so much for so many have a great time for themselves.
Put on your best bib and get ready for the VFW’s Pig Roast and Barbeque! That’s Saturday, July 19 from to 2 to 6 p.m. There will be hot dogs, hamburgers, all the fixings and beverages. Plus you get to enjoy a great view of Jamaica Bay and the Manhattan skyline. And of course, there will be the guest of honor, the fabulous roast pig.
Admission is $20 for adults, $10 for children and little ones four and under get to come in free. The VFW folks are telling everyone “Bring your family and friends and enjoy yet another VFW Post Barbeque!” All are welcome.
Coming from “out of town”? The VFW Prince-Wynn Post 260 is at 705 Shad Creek Road in Broad Channel, just off Cross Bay Boulevard on the west side.
No sooner had I mentioned not noticing any street markings painted on Cross Bay Boulevard, and then I got an email from Dan Mundy Jr. He noted that the contractor would have almost all of it done by the weekend. Sure enough, like a giant Etch-A-Sketch, the lines began appearing on the new black top.
I haven’t checked on the “Left Turn Permitted On Red” sign at 20th Road yet. But if it isn’t there already, hopefully it will be back up soon.
Dan notes that there will be designated parking along both sides of the median in the area of 10th to 15th roads. This is to provide spots for the residents on West 11th, 12th and 13th roads while the street raising is underway on those blocks.
Please be considerate and leave those spots for your neighbors who will need them.
The Iroquois Yacht Club opened with a bang this past Saturday, July 12. They had a great turnout and a great day. We’ll be sharing pictures real soon. There have been a lot of volunteers working very hard to rebuild the Sandy wrecked clubhouse and make this day a reality.
It was also a perfect day for the “It’s A Fluke” tournament at the Shad Creek Association. We’ll be sharing the results as soon as they’re in and more details about the day.
This month the flag at 17th Road Park flies for Charles H. Geier, United States Navy, WWII.
The Broad Channel Civic Association newsletter could use your help. With the increased cost of production, each edition will now need two sponsors each month. Contact the BC Civic if you can sponsor an issue.
Many thanks to dedicated newsletter editor Natalie Grant.

A big thank you to Vollies Chief Ed Wilmarth III for doing a great “Who’s Who” profile in last week’s Wave. Thanks, Chief.
The “Bubba for Mayor” Mardi Gras campaign is selling tickets for the $10,000 raffle. There will also be 18 smaller prizes. But only 400 tickets will be sold! Each ticket is $100 and all proceeds go to the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department. Need a ticket? Email Cindi Ciappetta at cindi.ciappetta@baml.com.
All Mardi Gras proceeds go to support the BCVFD this year.
Story time, board games and crafts for kids and teens will be at the BC Library through mid-August. Stop by for a schedule.

With sadness this week Broad Channel says goodbye to Frankie George of West 13th Street. He is already greatly missed by his family, his friends and his community. Got BC news? Share it by sending it toworkingstories@aol.com. Thanks for reading.
