Broad Channel Bits

By Dan Guarino
The nicer weather that has enveloped Broad Channel and Rockaway has been great for enjoying big events and everyday pleasures alike. The tennis, basketball and handball courts by 17th Road Park have been busy. No doubt the fishing spots and ball fields by the old Broad Channel Day Camp are being well used, as are the BCAC fields and playground and the sprinklers and colorful climbing equipment at Gene Gray Park atEast 9th Road.
Walking and bike riding have become very popular, too. Lately I have been trying to do one or the other in the evening.
The other day I was strolling towards the bridge, when two ladies came along in the opposite direction. Naturally I stepped aside to let them pass. One young girl proudly walked along navigating a carriage with her baby doll tucked safely inside. Peering in, I said “What a lovely baby,” as they passed. The little girl and her mother both smiled.
Well, Saturday, July 12, is the big fish day. The Shad Creek Association is holding its 20th annual “It’s A Fluke” contest. If you hurry, you can still register by Friday, July 11, after 5 p.m. at the Shad Creek clubhouse on Cross Bay Boulevard. The fee is $25 per angler for the contest. There will be prizes for the largest fluke and a Calcutta for largest Sea Robin, with $5 per angler. There will be $10 per boat for the total weight of three flukes. Plus raffles. Check out “Shad Creek Assoc.” on Facebook.
The Iroquois Yacht Club is also celebrating its opening day on July 12. They are out on the end of the boardwalk off East 12th Road. Just follow the rebuilt wooden walkway out and make a left. The club itself is now fully rebuilt from the storm. As they say on their Facebook page, “Opening Party is this Saturday! Hope to see all of you there.”
Registration has begun for the St. Camillus-St. Virgilius Religious Education Program for September. Every Catholic child who attends a public school is encouraged to register, beginning in the first grade. There’s no registration and classes are held on Wednesday afternoon from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in St. Camillus Academy. For information call 718-634-8229 or email: saintvirg2@aol.com.
Also St. Camillus will be offering a free full-day pre-kindergarten program starting in September. For more information, please call 718-634-5260.
No doubt we will have word soon as to what will happen to the old St. Virgilius school building and adjacent lunch room structure.
Chris ‘Bubba’ Kalisak’s “Bubba for Mayor” Mardi Gras campaign is still going strong. Keep an eye out for new events and fun fundraisers.
By the way Chris’s campaign is also selling raffles for this year’s Mardi Gras. The grand prize is, wait for it, $10,000. There are 18 smaller cash prizes! Tickets are $100 each. Only 400 will be sold.
Need a ticket? Email Cindi Ciappetta at cindi.ciappetta@baml.com.
All Mardi Gras proceeds go to support the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department.
Story time, board games and crafts for kids and teens has started for the summer at the BC Library. Activities will be running through mid-August. Stop by for a schedule. Don’t miss a thing.
Every Wednesday, our library is offering great computer and job hunting skills training. This Wednesday, July 16, there will be Interview Skill at 1 p.m. and Intro to Internet at 2:30 p.m. July 23 will have Cover Letters at 1 p.m. and Beginner’s Word at 2:30 p.m. July 30 will feature Job Search Strategies at 1 p.m. and Beginner’s PowerPoint at 2:30 p.m. All workshops are free!
Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens will have someone at the Broad Channel library between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of every month. They are there to help anyone hit by Hurricane Sandy. As the Civic newsletter noted “Answering your questions about recovery, developing a plan to address your needs, connect you with appropriate community resources and assist you with applications for programs you may be eligible for.”
Do not run out and change your glasses. There really are no lines painted in yet on Cross Bay Boulevard. Likewise, the “Left Turn Permitted On Red” is still not back up at 20th Road. BC residents and visitors alike are noting that it is a colossal pain in the neck to get past that intersection. Especially with summer traffic, it is also causing heavy snarls which could be easily avoided. Just put the sign back up!
Looks like there’s going to be a new store in town. Look out for the opening of Broad Channel Wine and Liquor.
If you haven’t already, you can catch up with Pete Mahon at www.w12thrd.blogspot.com. Most recently he had continual updates on Hurricane Arthur and what Broad Channel residents could expect. He’s also got some good information on expected street flooding due to the higher tides. And where else could you find an entry like “(Hopefully) The McCarthy's are on their way back to West 12th Road!” Best of luck to you, Pete.
Hey, don’t forget to get a ticket (or two or four) for the Rockaway Theatre Company’s production ofGypsy! It starts next Friday, July 18. You’ll see quite a few Broad Channel faces there, yes, and a ton of talent on the stage, backstage and in the orchestra.
Finally, I want to personally thank everyone who came out for the Rockaway! arts festival/exhibition opening day and has visited so far. The sight of thousands and thousands coming down, enjoying and seeing, in some cases for the first time, all the great things we have out here, just blew past everyone’s expectations.
As Rockaway Artists Alliance’s president, I thank you all for your support, and thank every volunteer who worked incredibly hard to make this happen. They are do-ers!
The exhibition is running every Thursday-Sunday from 12 to 6 p.m. through Labor Day. The admission is free and so is the great parking. I invite you to come and see!
