Clear the sidewalks. Last Sunday I pulled the bike I ordered, which arrived the week before, out of the box and began assembling it on my back deck.
Of course, if you remember it was really sunny and hot Sunday. So after a short while I began to feel like an ant under a magnifying glass, building a pontoon bridge.
Still, give or take some adjustments, it was ready to go. I took a test ride (okay, a joyride) down Channel Road behind the handball courts. Yes, I just missed the huge pothole in the middle of the road there. Thanks.
I can’t tell you how much fun that was.
Now, when you buy something off the internet, they don’t really give you a real good idea on the color. This ‘classic cruiser’ is fire engine red, with cream color fenders, and white sidewall tires. Basically it’s like riding a candy cane down the street. But that means that every day is Christmas morning.
Whether you were rooting for California Chrome or not, I hope you enjoyed the ‘Belmont Steaks’ event at the VFW last weekend. The crowd enjoyed barbecued steak sandwiches, burgers, cold drinks and the like from the Post’s beautiful backyard. And they enjoyed the big race’s action on large screens inside.
No doubt Tonalist’s Triple Crown win surprised a lot of people. It was no surprise that everybody had a great time anyway at the VFW. And nobody had to spend hours inching their way out of the parking lot atBelmont.
In fact, in Broad Channel, a lot of people probably just walked home.
If it’s still Friday, June 13, you still have time to make the Shad Creek Association Golf Outing awards party and dinner. It’s $35 per person for a great time and takes place at the Shad Creek clubhouse place at529 Cross Bay Boulevard.
The tournament starts at 3 p.m. at the Riis Park Pitch n’ Putt. The party will be, well, later.
Next Saturday, June 21, the VFW is having a barbecue! From 2 to 6 everyone is invited for food, drink, a great view of the bay, Brooklyn and Manhattan and a good time. It’s $20 per person, $10 for kids. Little ones four and under are free. Coming from out of town? The VFW is located at 705 Shad Creek Road. All proceeds go to help the Post’s hard working volunteers help our vets.
If you know someone who is ill, homebound, disabled or otherwise unable to attend Mass at St. Virgilius or St. Camillus, please call either parish office. Extraordinary Ministers will bring will bring Communion to them.
I have known a few people who have taken great comfort in these visits. Not only were they cheered by the visit and the ability to celebrate services, but they were uplifted by knowing that their parish did not forget them.

I hear the Holloways of Broad Channel have celebrated a wedding. Congratulations to Amber H. and Dylan M., the new Mr. and Mrs. Mancini. Our best wishes to all the family.

Stop in now and pick some beach reading, even if you’re just settling in for a peaceful read on your deck. The library also has an expanding collection of Playaway audiobooks, which put the recording and the slightly bigger than a matchbook sized player all in one package. No more CDs to slide in and out. Just plug it into your car sound system like an IPod or plug your mini-headphones into it. Then enjoy.
They are great for listening to in the car, especially if you’re idling on Cross Bay Boulevard.
Work continues on the ‘down to the ground’ repaving of the boulevard. By now almost the entire road, both on the east side and west, is milled, nearly to the northern end of town. All along the way the manhole covers are raised like wide anthills and it has been kind of amusing watching small, low slung cars dodging around them as they zip by.
With the summer traffic coming and going from the bridge and beach, and everyday commuters doing the same, you know that Broad Channel’s one and only main drag is getting pretty congested these days.
It’s important that it gets done, but it will be nice when the dust settles. Literally. Now that I live just off the Boulevard, there is dust settling over everything on an hourly basis. Can’t wait till the project is over.
And I thought Noel Road was a busy street when I lived there!
The other day a muffler piece went clattering down the road. Although in all fairness it seemed like it was already well rusted through before it ever hit BC. I saw this when I pulled it out of the busy street to prevent further mayhem.
I do admit that once the resurfacing is done I will miss my favorite rumble strip that comes up just after Rock n Roll bagels, just after the traffic light at 20th Road. It’s an odd piece of roadway patch, a few feet wide and a quarter block long. Every day and every night when I come back from Rockaway it is there, in the right hand lane, just under my left front tire.
No matter how late it is, it reminds me that I am almost home.
