QUEENS
Three hundred bird species — more than half of those that reside in the northeast US— have been spotted at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Broad Channel. A free hiking permit is required and can be obtained at the visitors’ centre before you enter the grounds. Stroll through well-worn paths around a salt marsh, brackish ponds, upland woods and an open bay to see migrating birds against the distant backdrop of Manhattan’s skyscrapers. If you’re not an avian enthusiast, 60 species of butterflies and one of the region’s largest horseshoe crab populations can also be found among native reptiles and amphibians.
