Not sure where the weather is going these days. But lately I’ve been going to bed with my sweatshirt, hat and winter coat on. It’s not that my apartment is cold. It just saves time, since I am only going to wake up and put all this stuff back on again anyway.
The way this winter has been going, I now sleep firmly holding my snow shovel. I wake and automatically start shoveling.
Hopefully you “sprang ahead” last weekend just in time for the first brunch of the season.
The American Legion’s Ladies Auxiliary did a great job. The pancakes, eggs and omelets, all made fresh to order, were all great. Everyone from toddlers to adults came out, usually in whole family bunches. They actually rolled out more tables because the Legion Hall was that crowded.
The company was excellent and it was all for a good cause.
Sunday, March 9th, marked the 11th Annual Jane Fuller Brunch for Cancer Care.
Probably like you, I too have lost too many dear people in my life to cancer. And I have come close to losing too many more. I am glad there were so many people there to support.

Yes, you can sign up now for a brand new, 6-hour defensive driving course to be held on Wednesday, April 2nd and 9th, from 7 to 10 p.m. It’s right across the bridge at St. Camillus School Auditorium. For those not using GPS, that’s at 185 Beach 99th Street in Rockaway Park.
There is no test, and refreshments will be served.
Taking this course will give you a 10 percent discount on your liability, collision and no fault insurance for the next three years. It can also take up to 4 points off your driver’s license.
Seats are going fast, but your $45 fee will hold one for you. Call Helen at 917- 553-2409 or 718-945-4648 now. Proceeds go to support St. Camillus-St. Virgilius parish religious education classes.
(*Doing a 180 on two wheels should only be done by professional stunt drivers on a closed track. Do not attempt this in your living room.)
The Broad Channel Pre-K is having an open house! On Thursday, March 27th and April 3rd, from 10- 10:30 a.m. That will be at the BCAC clubhouse at 125 Cross Bay Boulevard by the BCAC Field.
Registration will be given out at each open house. Due to limited space, there is a limit of 15 children per open house, and just the parents and interested child should come down.

Nice to see so many people at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Rockaway! Congrats to all who marched and all who came to cheer and enjoy. This is one parade that you don’t just stand on the sidelines and watch. No two ways about it, you are part of it!
There were more than a few BC people swelling the crowd and in the parade.
I was marching with the Rockaway Artists Alliance. Many thanks of course to the all those who marched in our group and all the kids who made the banners and dressed up. You guys are the best. A special thanks to all the PS 47 parents and kids right here in BC who came out. They were steadfast troupers right to the end.
We had a great time and the good fortune to be right in front of the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department crew. Let me tell you, the Vollies rocked the house. Not only did their terrific sound system belt out the Isley Brothers’ “Shout,” the Beatles’ “Twist And Shout” and that Korean classic, Psy’s “Gangnam Style”, but, and I swear this is true, at every stop they broke out dancing!

The Broad Channel Historical Society could use your photos and BC artifacts. Back when Liz and I were working on the book “Images of America: Broad Channel,” we asked a lot people for photos if BC. More than a few at first said, ‘Oh, those? They’re only just old snapshots” or “It’s family stuff we’ve had hanging around for decades.”
But each was a window into Broad Channel history. We got to know people long gone. They became like friends, like family. And we got to see amazing places in Broad Channel that have since faded away into time.

Finally, straight from the police blotter, a criminal enterprise that was doomed to failure. It seems that four suspects— -three men and one woman, were picked up for ‘trying’ to pass off counterfeit currency at ‘some’ of the businesses in Broad Channel.
They must be from out of town. Honestly, would anybody familiar with BC not know that first store owner would be on the phone right away as soon as these four characters left his shop? He’d be ringing up all the other store owners, telling them to keep an eye out for them!
And wouldn’t a dozen or more people in the Channel already be looking out their windows, talking to their neighbors and buzzing the precinct about four suspicious people traveling around in a pack from store to store?
It’s not that crime doesn’t happen in Broad Channel. It just has a lot harder time getting work here.
