Broad Channel Bits

Considering how this winter is going, I think we should all get together and give each other the gift of rock salt.
We’ll climb out of our houses, over the impacted ice and snow, then, as one town, throw salt across the streets and sidewalks. Then over hot coffee and cocoa we’ll sit back and watch all this, um...stuff (finally) melt!
Afterwards we’ll get together at the firehouse or the Legion and watch a movie like “500 Days Of Summer.” That’s my idea of a great mid-winter holiday! Hopefully we won’t have to do it every year.
Here are a BC few things to look forward to besides more snow.
The St. Virgilius Rosary Alter Society meets this Monday, February 17th at 12:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall. The group meets the third Monday of every month at that same time at the Hall, at 209 Cross Bay Boulevard in BC. New members are always welcome!
This Saturday, February 22nd, is the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department’s 109th Officer's Installation Dance. It all starts at 8 p.m. at the Legion Hall.
Catering will be by All American Channel Market. Music will be provided by DJ's @ Work!
Tickets are $45 and available in advance or at the door. Call the firehouse at 718-474-6888 to reserve your spot, and ask about their special Couples Getaway Raffle! The Vollies are promising a “night…always promises good food, great friends, and memories.”
All proceeds go to keeping the BCFVD always ready to serve and protect us all.
Stop! The 6-hour defensive driving class point and insurance reduction program is back.
The two-part class will be held on Thursday, March 6th and 13th class at St. Camillus’ Springman Hall. That’s at 185 Beach 99th Street in Rockaway Park. Both sessions run from 7 to 10 p.m.
Your $45 fee payment guarantees you a seat.
Taking this class gets you a three year, 10 percent discount on your liability, collision and no fault insurance and uptoa4pointreductionoffyourdriver’s license. Proceeds help support the St. Camillus
St. Virgilius parish CCD education classes.
The annual St. Camillus-St. Virgilius Parish St. Patrick’s Dance is coming your way. It will be held at Springman Hall on Sunday, March 2nd. The grand fun starts at 2 p.m. and goes on from there.
There’ll be corned beef and cabbage, soda and beer and music by the Cunningham Brothers. Make your reservation/ get information. Call 718-634- 8229. But don’t wait. This is going to be big.
Your child does not have to be from BC to join the Broad Channel Scout Troop. Troop 282 has ongoing open registration every Monday night.
Registration for Cub Scouts, which is for boys age 6-10, is every Monday at 6:30 p.m., at the American Legion Hall. Boy Scouts registration, for boys ages 11-18, is at 7:00 p.m., also every Monday at the Shad Creek Association, located at 529 Cross Bay Boulevard.

You may have noticed landscaping and new trees that have sprung up around the library. They’re there, under the snow. Really.
No doubt this is due to a last minute meeting a few months ago between some BC residents and library officials. The Queens Library wanted some new ideas about redoing the area, which had previously been redone by Sandy. Nice to see those ideas sprouting up with our community’s input.

By the way, Pete also reports that on Monday, February 10th, “Contractors from EIC Associates were present at the end of West 12th Road …. taking samples from the end of street outflow where the new bulkhead will be constructed. EIC Associates is the contractor awarded the BYC DOT Broad Channel Capital Project (HWQ1182A) which will see the construction of new bulkheads and raised streets on West 11th, 12th and 13th roads.”
According to their website, "EIC Associates performs heavy construction and marine work for the public and private sectors in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut with a special focus on the public sector of the New York City Metropolitan Area."

Well, maybe. Someday.
