"It’s great news for public housing residents", Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan) said of the extra funds from HUD.

Joseph Apostol returns to his home on Sandy-ravaged Cedar Grove Beach Place, S.I., on Nov. 1, 2012.

The feds are bumping up a $1.34 billion grant to New York City for Hurricane Sandy recovery after a push by local lawmakers.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has agreed to provide $104 million more to repair low-income housing in the city, lawmakers said.

“It’s great news for public housing residents,” said Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan).

The funding follows an initial $1.8 billion grant and a second $1.34 billion installment HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan and Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Oct. 28.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-Manhattan) spoke to HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan late last month to argue the city was being shortchanged on housing in the second round of grants announced Oct. 28.

"The secretary, being the New Yorker that he is, agreed that something needed to be done, and these funds will help address the shortfall," Schumer said. "The damage to our housing stock in the wake of the storm was enormous, and these funds will help rebuild and protect them from the next storm.”

What about the rest of us who are still not home? Sandy didn't devastate based on income, so why is assistance discriminating?
