Stopped by my old place on Noel Road the Sunday before last, and came face to face with my old garbage can. Nice to know it survived the storm, too.
Even the big white “126 Noel Rd” I painted on it years ago is still intact.
Of course, it does me no good now that I live at “1430 Cross Bay.” Still, it is faithfully holding refuse for neighbors near my old address.
My new trash can has a unique, interpretive bright white paint design that is suggestive of the numbers 1430. (Something you probably already know: Never spray paint your garbage can on a windy day!)
Red Alert: This Saturday, November 16th, is the VFW’s Penny Social. (Sorry for any confusion on the date.) Come on down!
It will be at the American Legion Hall. The $10 admission, a great bargain, covers raffles, cake and coffee. The doors open up at 6 p.m. And calling starts at 7 p.m.
Josette says over at the VFW, “The American Legion has kindly opened their hall for us! We have so many prizes from tablets to Christmas wrap, a 50/50 and door prizes. The proceeds will help us with a Thanksgiving dinner for the disabled veterans of the St. Albans home and all our future events for them.”
If you’ve been to these before, come down and enjoy. If you haven’t, come out, give it a try and have some fun! If you’re coming from out of the Channel, the American Legion Hall is right at 209 Cross Bay Boulevard. If you’re pointed towards Howard Beach, that’ll be on your left.
Did we mention the great Shopping Night the PS 47 Parent’s Association is hosting this Tuesday, November 19th? Come down to the school, at 9 Power Road, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. for some great buys.

Great brunch, by the way, at the Legion last Sunday. Hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary, all proceeds go to support the Children’s Annual Christmas Party. Knowing how many kids ‘missed’ the holidays last year, they want to make it extra special this year.
It’s going to take more than a hurricane to keep our hardworking Broad Channel VFW and American Legion down. No matter what, they have a hand out to help others.
Mark your calendars now: the BC Crafters are holding their Annual Craft Fair, Friday, December 6th, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, December 7th, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Proceeds benefit the American Legion’s rebuilding fund.
It was very nice to meet Pat and Vic Ritter from BC last week at RAA’s “Calm/Storm/Rebirth” exhibition inFort Tilden. Turns out I have a photo in, taken out of my window on the night of the storm, that shows their daughter’s house on Noel Road. Well, six feet of water in the streets, a boat, and their daughter’s house- just behind the boat.
Happy to report the Ritter’s daughter and grandchildren were able to move back home last April.
Semper Fi: Happy Birthday to the United States Marine Corps, 238 years old as of Sunday, November 10th. And thank you to all our veterans, whose day we celebrate every November 11th. Thank you for your service. May the rest of us strive always to make this country worthy of the service and sacrifice of these fine ladies and gentlemen.
Broad Channel this week says goodbye to Cathy Conklin, an important member of our community for a long time. A mother, wife, beloved grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, Cathy was also a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 260. Our best to her family. She will be missed here in BC.
I notice that the announcement board out in front of Christ Presbyterian Church By The Sea now proudly says “Pastor: Reverend Manas.”
Starting with Easter, which was held at the BCAC clubhouse, Rev. Megan Manas has done a great job with the first services the congregation held as they came back from the storm.
Her words are wise, down to earth, and she even ‘gets’ the Broad Channel sense of humor, in a big way.
Now that it seems to be official, we wish her all the best.
Meantime, Christ Presbyterian is looking forward to celebrating the service and good works of Reverend Andrea Zarou this Sunday. This will be at a great gathering at Russo’s.
For 25 years, Reverend Zarou ministered to the needs and was an important part of the Broad Channelcommunity, before retiring last year.
Sandy could only slow down this celebration of Reverend Zarou, it could not stop it.
Saw this in the St. Virgilius office window and thought maybe somebody could use this information. “Catholic Charities Community Center. Rockaway Beach Satellite Office. Call for an appointment 347-473-5043”.
So far as I know, Pucci is still missing. If you have seen this small brown chihuahua that went missing on Sunday, October 27th, I am sure his family would be thrilled to know. Call in at Tommy’s Pizza at 718-945-6054. There is a reward.
Story Time is on. Bring your little ones and yourself for a new lively story, read out loud, every Friday at theBroad Channel Library at 1 p.m. This special ‘kid time’ is running through November 22nd.
People have been asking: Does anyone know of any book clubs in or near the Channel? Please let me know. I’ll be happy to help get the word out.
From the St. Virgilius bulletin: “Help (in) dealing with issues involved in emotional and spiritual recovery from Hurricane Sandy will be offered in Christ Presbyterian Church by the Sea beginning in November. Please contact Christ Presbyterian for more information.”
For those who need and those who can give, the parish food pantry is reopening November 20th it will be open on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon at St. Camillus.
There will be a Thanksgiving food collection in each area church for the donation of non-perishable goods. Monetary donations can be placed in the Poor Box.
