Broad Channel Bits

Is it just me? Or does everyone have this problem adjusting to Daylight Savings time?
I‘ve traveled (back when I could afford to) to places where I stepped off the plane and into a whole different time zone, with a five or six hour time difference between there and the U.S.
Oh, it’s morning over here and nearly midnight back home? No problem. I was just fine.
That one hour change for Daylight Savings? It’ll take weeks to get used to that!
Well, days may be shorter, and colder, but there’s plenty to lift your spirits.
The BCVFD is hosting “Turkey Karaoke Night” at Grassy’s on Saturday. November 9th starting at 8:30 p.m. It’s $10 at the door and the first 50 people will each receive a prize.
Don’t wait to get in on the BIG raffle. Grand prize? A Thanksgiving dinner for 10, including a turkey and all the sides!
Excited? Call 917-995-2390 or 718- 839-4302 to get your $5 raffle tickets. Drawing will be held on karaoke night. Go for the fun, music and drinks. Come home with a bird!
And if you don’t make it home, you can go straight to the American Legion brunch on Sunday, November 10th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. No judgments if you’re wearing sunglasses all through breakfast.
The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Brunch goes to support the Children's Annual Christmas Party.
They’d like to make it extra special for the kids this year as so many of them missed the holidays last year. Likewise so many have been on the go, moving from place to place and school to school since the hurricane.
Come down to the brunch, have a great breakfast and help a good cause.
There will also be raffles and 50/50’s.
Coming from out of town? The Legion Hall is at 209 Cross Bay Boulevard in Broad Channel.
Next week Sunday, November 17th, the American Legion will host the VFW as they roll out their Penny Social. Doors open 6 p.m., calling starts at 7 p.m. $10 admission covers admission, raffles, cake and coffee.
Reserve your table now. Call 646-344- 2640. All proceeds will support the annual Thanksgiving dinner the VFW does for the disabled veterans of the St. Albans home and all the other programs the VFW steadfastly does for our veterans.
There’s a Diocesan Bereavement Conference this Saturday, November 9th, from 12 to 5 p.m. at St. John’s University. If you have lost someone, come and be with others who understand. For information call 718-722- 6214.
Don’t forget Monday is Veteran’s Day, November 11th. Wherever you are, stop and take a moment for remembrance.
The Broad Channel library will be closed on Monday, November 11th, for Veteran’s Day.
A Dog In Need: A small brown Chihuahua named Pucci went missing on Sunday, October 27th. If you see this little guy, call in at Tommy’s Pizza at 718-945-6054. There is a reward. But more than that I am sure he just wants to get home, and that his family misses him dearly. Maybe you can help them out.
Story Time happens at the Broad Channel library every Friday starting at 1 p.m. through November 22nd. Bring your little ones to hear great stories read out loud. You could even enjoy a few yourself.
The PS 47 Parent’s Association is hosting a Shopping Night on Tuesday, November 19th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Come support local vendors and our school! Join in for some holiday shopping!
PS 47 is located at 9 Power Road in Broad Channel.
Hope to see you there!
Last Sunday’s Mass at St. Virgilius, in honor of those who have died in the parish in the past two years was standing room only. The Knights of Columbus of Rockaway were special guests.
Over 120 names were read in the moving service, and Father Richie added a personal touch, with a small comment about many. “I went to school with him,” he said. “She will be missed at CDC.” “He devotedly kept up the church.”
As each name was read, family members and friends were invited to place a rose near the altar.
Fr. Richie mentioned that the two Masses he celebrated in St. Virgilius shortly after the storm were the most moving in his 37 years in the priesthood.
From the St. V. bulletin: “Help (in) dealing with issues involved in emotional and spiritual recovery from Hurricane Sandy will be offered in Christ Presbyterian Church by the Sea beginning in November. Please contact Christ Presbyterian (for more information).”
His Final Touch prayer group started meeting again on Monday, November 4th! They’re meeting once a month at the St. Virgilius Convent, 210 Noel Road at 7 p.m. Keep your eyes open, check the St. Camillus-St. Virgilius website and pick up the church bulletin for the date of the next meeting.
The parish food pantry is reopening November 20th. For those who need and those who can give, it will be open on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon at St. Camillus.
There will be a Thanksgiving food collection box in each area church for the donation of non-perishable goods. Monetary donations can be placed in the Poor Box.
The BC Crafters are holding their Annual Craft Fair, Friday, December 6th, from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday December 7 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Proceeds benefit the American Legion Post 1404 Rebuilding Fund. Homemade crafts, baked goods, chocolates, holiday gifts plus raffles. Kitchen will be open. Come on down and help support this worthy cause.
The new Broad Channel Historical Calendars are out! Get yours, still only $5 each, at All American Channel Market, Rock and Roll Bagels, at BC Civic meetings or from any Historical Committee member, like me!
