Broad Channel Bits
It seems to be happening to all of us more and more this year.Have you ever had the opportunity to share someone else’s happiness? To be just close enough to it to feel its glow on your own face?
I was in a supermarket in Rockaway, when two women who apparently had not seen each other in months stopped to chat.
“I just got back into my house,” one woman said. “We don’t have floors yet. It’s like a dorm upstairs. We don’t even have beds, just mattresses. But it’s so good to be home.”
I didn’t know either of these two women, and only happened to be in the same aisle. But I found myself smiling as if this home was my own.
Same thing happened when looking at photos of a back deck canal party at my friend Mary Lou’s home here in the Channel. The smiles there were so wide; I couldn’t help smiling, too.
Having shared so much worry, heartbreak, frustration and just plain exhaustion over the past year, it’s nice to know that our joy is just as infectious, if not even more so!
Coming up this Saturday, October 5th, it’s the Shad Creek Association’s Annual Pig Roast. Party into fall with brats, burgers, hot dogs, turkey, ham, tap beer, soda and, yes, the pig! 50/50’s and raffles, too.

The annual seniors’ dinner hosted by the American Legion is on Sunday, October 6th at 1 p.m. There will be a full dinner, music and a great time.
By the way, our own BC American Legion Post 1404 was honored at the National Legion Convention in Houston, Texas, for the outstanding work of its members in the months after Sandy.
The Broad Channel Athletic Club put out the following about the new, volunteer built, playground up at the BCAC Field. “We've had a few questions about the use of the beautiful new playground. The playground was built by the community and for the community!!! Come down and enjoy, we just ask that you help is keep it clean and close the gate when you’re done. Have fun Broad Channel!!!”
Couldn’t have said it better.
It was so good to sit down to brunch once again at the Legion this past Sunday. I have been waiting 11 months for this!
News from the Veterans of Foreign Wars: “The VFW will be holding our annual Penny Social on Saturday, November 16th. The American Legion in BC has kindly opened their hall for us! Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Calling starts at 7:00.
“We have so many prizes from tablets to Christmas wrap, a 50/50, and door prizes. Admission is $10 which includes raffle tickets, coffee and cake.
“The proceeds will help us with a Thanksgiving dinner for the disabled veterans of the St. Albans home and all our future events for them. Tables are going quickly so deposits are required. The American Legion is throwing a Halloween party on Saturday, October 26th at the Legion hall from 8 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $25 per person and includes food, music and two complimentary drinks. Plan on wearing your best and most imaginative costume; there will be cash prizes!

There’ll be no coolers, but there will be a cash bar. All proceeds go to the American Legion.
All grade 6, 7 and 8 students, parochial and public, who are considering a Catholic high school, are invited to an Open House at St. Camillus School on Wednesday, October 9th at 6:30 p.m.
St. Camillus is at 185 Beach 99th Street.
Representatives from Catholic high schools in Brooklyn and Queens will be down to answer questions and talk about what their schools have to offer. Everyone is welcome.
Join the celebration. Rev. There will be late registration for basketball on October 17th from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at St. Camillus Springman Hall at 180 Beach 100 Street.
Players are still being accepted for Mini Basketball (Grades K-2 - boys and girls) which plays on Saturday mornings; Boys' Intramural Basketball (Grades 3-8) and Girls' Intramural Basketball (Grades 3-8). Want more information? Call 718-634-8229.

Did you know that the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department has an active Junior Department? They are affiliated with the NYPD Explorers and, as the BCVFD website says, “Broad Channel Junior Fire Department, created to assist the Broad Channel Volunteers, Inc., in protecting the life and property of Broad Channel residents.”
Chief Dan McIntyre let me know they are the future of the department. I am sure many parents would love to get their kids involved in something as beneficial and as rooted in the community as this.
Junior Department members can be accepted from 11 years old and up. And they can join the department at age 17. For more information call 718- 474-8888 or stop by the firehouse on Noel Road.
