Queens Democratic Council candidate Lew Simon is recovering from a cardiac event

Simon, running against Republican Councilman Eric Ulrich, will undergo angioplasty at Long Island Jewish Medical Center on Friday. He vows to hit the campaign trail again soon

Even a could-be cardiac event can’t keep this candidate down.

Lew Simon, the irrepressible Democratic district leader from Rockaway who is challenging Republican City Councilman Eric Ulrich in November, is taking phone calls — and pot shots — from a hospital bed at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

“I’ve done more probably in my hospital bed than Mr. Ulrich has done since the storm,” Simon said Thursday as he retraced the steps that landed him in sick bay.

“I didn’t feel well yesterday,” Simon told the News. “I ran to St. John’s. They moved me to LIJ to do tests, and they said I just need a stent.”

Simon said he is looking forward to returning to the campaign trail as soon as possible.

“You know how I work,” he said. “Wednesday is my fund-raiser at Bungalow Bar. I hope everyone comes.”

Ulrich, meanwhile, ignored the shot.

“I wish Lew a speedy recovery,” the incumbent said. “And I look forward to seeing him on the campaign trail soon.”
