Those hazy lazy crazy days…of fall?
Sure, last week it was 79 degrees at 5 in the morning. The fan ran all night and sandals and short sleeves were the uniform of the day.
Humidity and morning tides were high as you pushed sweat out of your eyes and looked deep into the cabinet under the bathroom sink, looking for your sun block.
Aren’t these the October days you remember as a kid?
Yet people will tell you that, somehow, kinda sorta, all this continuing wacky weather information must be wrong because maybe they stuck the thermometer in the wrong place. (Insert your own punch line here.)
Oh, yeah, there was a tornado watch on Monday. And that hurricane thing last year.
On another note, it was a proud moment to stand side by side with our neighbors both inside and outside the American Legion Hall at the Stop FEMA Now rally on September 28th.
A year ago who would have guessed we would all be right here, right here in Broad Channel, united with Old Howard Beach, New Howard, West Hamilton Beach, Breezy, Rockaway Point, Rockaway Beach, Arverne, Rockaway Park, Belle Harbor and more?
Across the country, as far south as Florida and west as Hawaii, we were part of rallies held at multiple locations in at least nine states.
And out our way, there was Broad Channel, squarely at the center.
As they say, there is much much more that unites us than divides us.
You can still make late registration for basketball at St. Camillus Springmann Hall at 180 Beach 100th Street. That’ll be on Thursday, October 17th from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Players are being accepted for Mini Basketball (Grades K-2 - Boys & Girls) which plays on Saturday mornings; Boys' Intramural Basketball (Grades 3- 8) and Girls' Intramural Basketball (Grades 3-8). Want more information? Call 718-634-8229.
Boo! On Saturday, October 26th the American Legion is throwing a Halloween party at the Legion Hall, 8 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $25 and includes food, music and two complimentary drinks. Come in your dropdead best and most imaginative costume. There will indeed be cash prizes!

No coolers, please, but there will be a cash bar. All proceeds go to the American Legion.
The annual Broad Channel Ladies Softball Game will be on Saturday, September 28th at the Broad Channel Athletic Club Field off Cross Bay Boulevard.
Any player can sign up ahead of time at the Ruffle Bar on Cross Bay Boulevard.
It’s $20 per player to sign up, which includes food and drink at the aftergame keg party at Ruffle Bar.
Not playing? Come out and enjoy a fun game. Food and beverages will be sold at the field, so leave the coolers at home.
Proceeds go to the Broad Channel Vollies.

From the BCAC: “We've had a few questions about the use of the beautiful new playground. The playground was built by the community and for the community!!! Come down and enjoy, we just ask that you help keep it clean and close the gate when you’re done. Have fun Broad Channel!!!”
The VFW will hold its annual Penny Social on Saturday, November 16th.
The American Legion, at 209 Cross Bay Boulevard, is graciously opening its doors to their fellow veterans’ organization for the night.
Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Calling starts at 7:00 p.m.
Admission is $10 which includes raffle tickets, coffee and cake. Prizes range from tablets to Christmas wrap, a 50/50, and door prizes.
Proceeds will go to providing a Thanksgiving dinner for the disabled veterans of the St. Albans home and future events to support them.
Tables are going quickly. Deposits are required, so call 646-344-2640 for a reservation.
Long delayed but most welcome, Broad Channel will celebrate Reverend Andrea Zarou’s retirement with a party on Sunday, November 17th at Roma View Catering from 11 to 3 p.m.
It’s $50 per person, with checks made payable to Christ Presbyterian Church. Get them to Joyce Adamiszyn at 21 West 17th Road; Broad Channel, NY 11693 or to Christ Presbyterian Church at 102 Noel Road; Broad Channel.
This Tuesday, October 15th, is the absolute deadline for all payments.
Sandy could only slow down this event, but it could never stop it.
Father Olhmeyer lets us know there will be a VIRTUS Child Safety Workshop on Sunday, October 27th at 1 p.m. in St. Camillus School 185 Beach 99th Street. ALL CYO coaches and managers must attend a Virtus workshop. If you have never attended, this is the opportunity. There is NO cost. More information? Please call 718-634-8229.
Mark your calendar now and save the date for a great New Year’s Eve Party on December 31st at the American Legion. Details are coming soon. After this year and a half, I think we will all want to celebrate.
Want to get a young person you know, your child, grandchild or friend, involved in something important?
Check into the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department’s Junior Department.
The Junior Department was created to assist the Broad Channel Vollies in protecting the life and property of BC residents. And there’s much for them to learn and accomplish along the way.
You can’t beat that.
No doubt many would love to get their kids involved in something as beneficial and as rooted in the community as this.
Members can be accepted from 11 years old and up. And they can join the department at age 17. For info call 718- 474-8888 or stop by the firehouse on Noel Road.
Note: If the government shutdown is still in effect by the time you read this, and it looks likely that it will be, in our area the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Riis Park, Fort Tilden and Floyd Bennett Field will be closed. All activities many BC people enjoy, from kid’s little league and soccer to wildlife programs to the Rockaway Theatre Company, Rockaway Artists Alliance and Aviator Sports Complex will remain suspended.
