More than 70 vets enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, salads, cole slaw and more, all prepared by the Legion volunteers.
They also enjoyed live musical entertainment from Wax R Back.
“The band has been doing this for over 25 years for the vets,” Ladies Auxiliary member Carol Corbett said, “and they love them.”
“Every year we enjoy giving back to our veterans,” she said, “and they enjoy coming down ... for a day out. They leave with a gift from us and a smile on their faces!”

Photo by Dan GuarinoThe National Convention of the American Legion, held in Houston, Texas was the site where Broad Channel American Legion Post 1404 was awarded a “whole-hearted testimonial of admiration” for their work during and after Hurricane Sandy.
BC Legion members were presented with a “National Emergency Fund Post Excellence Award” for providing “support to your community after a national disaster.”
The presented plaque went on to note “your accomplishments demonstrated the abiding strength of the humanitarian spirit that is one of our nation’s hallmarks.”
It was signed by the Legion’s National Commander, James E. Koutz and National Adjutant Daniel S. Wheeler.
Starting directly after the hurricane, the American Legion post on Cross Bay Boulevard became a center point for the island community. The first meeting between Broad Channel civic leaders, elected officials and storm tossed residents took place there the day after the hurricane.
It continued to act as an emergency relief and supply location, warming center, donation drop off, food and hot meal distribution point and community center.
The post also hosted FEMA, SBA and other official emergency organizations, as well as countless volunteer workers and groups.
A video presentation showing scenes of the Rockaways and Broad Channel and their recovery after the storm was shown at the national convention on August 28th.
