Plan to deposit 600,000 cubic yards of sand on hurricane-ravaged Rockaways begins this week
Foundations that once supported the boardwalk at the Rockaways lie exposed. A plan to return the beach to its former glory will commence this week. |
The beach buildup in the Rockaways is coasting ahead.
A plan to deposit about 600,000 cubic yards of sand along the Hurricane Sandy-ravaged Queens beach will
begin early this week, Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $10 million contract this summer to a dredging company,
Weeks Marine of Cranford, N.J., to handle the work. The sand will be taken from East Rockaway Inlet and
moved to the most eroded areas from Beach 89th to Beach 149th Sts.
“Soon Rockaway’s beaches will be well on their way to being rebuilt and protected against future storms,”
Schumer (D-N.Y.) said.
The project is expected to take several weeks.
