ULRICH INTRODUCES BILL TO CLEAN UP MOLD IN ABANDONED HOMES
Nine Months After Sandy, Mold Still A Growing Concern

City Hall, NY – July 24, 2013 - City Council Member Eric A. Ulrich (R-Queens) introduced legislation today aimed at addressing dangerous mold conditions in communities still recovering from Hurricane Sandy. The bill, Intro. 1119, would address the issue of mold growth inside and outside of abandoned residential buildings. Many of these properties are either in foreclosure or abandoned and threaten the public health and safety of the surrounding neighborhood.

If passed, the New York City Department of Health would be authorized to inspect these properties and issue notices of violation. If the property owner fails to comply within a set period of time, the Department of Health will execute the remediation and bill the person or entity responsible for maintaining the home.

Ulrich said “These homes are a public nuisance and blight on our communities. You don’t have to be a scientist or medical doctor to know how dangerous and unhealthy mold can be. I am optimistic that this legislation will force the banks and absentee landlords to take responsibility for these properties once and for all.”
