President’s Message
The civic association is urging all residents on West 11th, 12th and 13th Roads to return their consent waivers for the street raising project. This project has been revised to reflect numerous changes that our residents have requested, and at this time, all of our outstanding issues have been addressed. This is a multi-million dollar project that will see major flood relief as well as significantly increase property values. The waivers need to be notarized, and in the interest of expediting this requirement, we will have a notary present at the October 25th meeting. Carol Fox has generously offered to notarize any waivers brought to the meeting, and we will have a table set up at the back of the VFW hall for those who wish to take advantage of this opportunity. Residents need not stay for the entire meeting if unable, just come by and have the waiver notarized, and if you like, leave it and it will be mailed out for you.
We will have participatory budget meeting immediately following the October 25th civic meeting. This is the second year that Councilman Ulrich is participating in this process for distributing discretionary funding to worthwhile projects throughout his district. Last year Broad Channel residents were widely represented at the meetings, and this led to our public school, P.S. 47, receiving $100,000 in computer and smart board upgrades for our children to use. We hope that we can replicate that great participation this year and see another useful and needed concept funded for our residents.

The Civic Association along with the Lanark Block Association and the East 12th Road Block Association met with the NYS DEC, NYC DEP, and the NYC DOT at a meeting arranged by Assemblyman Goldfeder at his office in an attempt to resolve the decades old problem of the tremendous bureaucratic red tape that has held up the installation of sanitary sewers to these homeowners. This was a very productive meeting, and we hope it will lead to a resolution to this situation as well as the outrageous fines levied on these homeowners for what has essentially been the failure of the City to live up to its well documented contractual obligations to provide this basic necessity.
Every Broad Channel resident should stop by the Historical Society’s Annual “Historical Day” event on October 28th from 12 noon until 5 PM at the VFW Hall. This group does an outstanding job of displaying the vast archives they have worked so hard to collect. It is an opportunity to see the history of this island, which is unique in this City. The photos and memorabilia span the decades and are quite amazing, and it is a great day to see friends and take a trip back in time.
