A friend told me I should not refer to this weather event as a "winter storm" because winter does not officially start until December 21st.
Meteorologists refer to "winter" as that quarter of the year wth the coldest temperatures which usually is considered early December through mid March.
Semantics aside, it presently appears that this weekend's winter storm will not be a snow event for us here in Broad Channel as any precipitation along the coast will changeover to rain on Sunday.
