Dear Neighbor,
I hope you and your families are enjoying the unusually warm winter weather!
During the past two weeks, I created my first piece of legislation, to help Veterans across NYS; I was honored as Deputy Grand Marshal for the Queens County St. Patrick's Day Parade; I joined with other legislators to co-sponsor protections for small businesses; and I announced I'll be hosting a mobile breast cancer screening van in March!
I've also attended civic meetings and planning groups, and kept up to date on some great community developments.  As always, my favorite part has been speaking with so many of you about your needs and your great works in the community.
You can stay up to date with community news and daily updates by following me on Facebook and Twitter!
As always,

Serving Those Who Served Our Country
This past week, I introduced A.5165, a bill to make it easier for Veterans and their loved ones, caretakers and community to get access to services throughout New York State.  It requires the contact information for each Veterans' Home to be placed on the website of the Division of Veterans' Affairs.
Co-Sponsoring Legislation to Protect Small Businesses

This past Tuesday I joined  Assemblymember Ron Kim for the announcement of theRestaurant Owners’ Whistleblower Protection Act (A. 5817 / S. 4472).  I  spoke about why the current system of health inspections is adversarial and arbitrary, and why it needs to be reformed.

Deputy Grand Marshal for Queens County St. Patrick’s Day Parade

I was named this past Saturday, February 18th, as a Deputy Grand Marshal for the 42nd Annual Queens County St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the second-largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City.

City tells Broad Channel - "No Soup for You!"

[The below appears in the Beachcomber Column of this week's WAVE]

BEACHCOMBER

Broad Channel Civic Association’s Dan Mundy Jr. isn’t too happy that Broad Channel is being shut out of the city’s plans for the FEMA boardwalk surplus funds, and frankly we think he has a point.
“The Broad Channel Civic Association submitted a number of projects for consideration as well as pointing out to them, and the Mayor’s office, that Broad Channel is part of this Parks Department area as well. We were encouraged by the support we received from so many on the community board who were just as shocked to see that we were not included. We also highlighted the unbelievable fact that after Hurricane Sandy, which saw all of our parks under 5 feet of water, no assessment was made by NYC Parks to examine the damage that our parks sustained or to submit such assessments to FEMA which may have resulted in funding for this neighborhood. Thankfully we have a very good friend in our Borough President Melinda Katz who has personally brought this omission to Parks Commissioner Silver and is pushing very hard to see Parks include Broad Channel in some of this funding.”
Good luck, Dan!

TOO MUCH TIME

Despite the fact that many consider me to be the epitome of an individual with absolutely too much time on his hands, my proclivity for somber reflection on the absurdities of life often reaps its own rewards.  For instance, sitting thoughtfully by my kitchen window during our recent snowstorm I could not help but wonder why parking meters always stay in effect when alternate side regulations are suspended for snow removal. Like many of us, the first thought that crossed my suspicious mind was the obvious one, money, but I figured I would call DOT and get the straight scoop from the horse's mouth.  DOT informed me that the suspension of alternate side parking regulations is a means of making sure us regular folk can leave our vehicles safely in a parking space on narrow residential streets instead of moving and possibly stranding them on the actual roadway which would then obstruct the movement of snow plows along that residential street.  On the other hand, DOT assured me that my "fattening the city treasury" conspiracy theory was all wet and that meter regulations actually remain in effect to ensure that sanitation can plow snow from curb sides in front of commercial businesses which serves to help those shops return to normal operation after the storm.  I am still not quite sure how plowing the parking spaces in front of commercial establishments does the businesses any good when every one's  car remains plowed in under feet of snow and ice on residential streets unable to travel to and park in the shop's nicely cleared curbside.  Nevertheless, despite my cynicism regarding any governmental explanations, I had to admit that this one actually made some sense and so in my X-File compendium of unexplained municipal anomalies, I marked this mystery as solved!  I thanked the DOT representative for her assistance in this this matter but before hanging up, I asked if she could perhaps shed some light on the long time confusion stemming from why we park on driveways and drive on parkways. Without missing a beat the DOT rep answered "You can blame that one on Robert Moses!"  Who knew DOT had a sense of humor?

The day after the snowstorm I was going through my email when I spotted an "Amber Alert" having been issued for a missing child in upstate New York.  I started to think to myself (remember "too much time on my hands") that a missing or abducted child is a pretty serious matter so why would they term it as "Amber", an innocuous color used to let you know that the street light is about to turn red or a fossilized piece of resin used to clone dinosaurs in Jurassic Park? Why not just term it a "Red Alert"?  As it turns out, an "Amber Alert" although officially a backronym for  "America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response" is in fact, named after Amber Hagerman, a young 9-year-old girl abducted and murdered in Arlington, Texas, in 1996.  Sadly, yet another mystery explained.

After coming out in impressive numbers to march on Washington and throughout the world, there is now much talk about the Women's March  group's next  "novel" idea - women should go on strike for a day. The organizers of the Women's March on Washington have set the date for their general strike, dubbed "A Day Without A Woman," for March 8, which is International Women's Day.  What some women may not know is that a "women's strike" is not really a novel idea nor is its' origination a female centric one.  “Lysistrata” is a bawdy anti-war play by the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes, first staged in 411 BC. It is the account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War, as Lysistrata convinces the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands as a means of forcing the men to negotiate a peace.  Of course due diligence also requires that I advise you to keep in mind that it was also Aristophanes who said "These impossible women! How they do get around us! The poet was right: Can't live with them, or without them."

Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Dear Neighbor,
I hope you and your families stayed safe and warm during the blizzard yesterday!

The last two weeks have been a whirlwind.  There are so many crucial things I've been fortunate to be a part of - important legislation at the state level, a major break in the Vetrano case, pushing for new forensic tools for police, fighting for beloved community landmarks, and making sure we have more transit options.
I've attended our civic meetings and planning groups, and seen first-hand the great things our community is doing.  My favorite part has been speaking with so many of you about issues large and small, from snow removal to your take on bills in Albany.  We're all ready to buckle down and tackle the work ahead!
You can stay up to date with community news and daily updates by following me on Facebook and Twitter!
As always,

Keep Our Flag Pole
I called on the City’s Parks, Buildings and Environmental Conservation Departments this week to work together, along with residents of Belle Harbor, to preserve a threatened flagpole, which commemorates local Fire Lieutenant Joe Agnello.  Lt. Agnello is one of the heroes who gave his life on 9/11.

NYS Commission on Forensic Science Meeting
The NYPD worked incredibly hard and should be commended for the caring, relentless and creative pursuit that led them to arrest a suspect in the Karina Vetrano murder case. Today I had the opportunity to join the Vetrano family in support of allowing Familial DNA Search as a forensic tool, at a special meeting of the NYS Commission on Forensic Science.

Interview with Scholars' Academy
Scholars' Academy middle and high school presidents Lauren M. and Ryan S. interviewed me last week about my role in the State Assembly and how civic engagement plays in local communities and the city as a whole.  It was a great experience!
