Between the Bridges in Broad Channel - "Hats and Horses Day!"

Between The Bridges: Hats & Horses

Don’t forget, come on down and make the Broad Channel VFW your “Old Kentucky Home for a Day,” this Saturday afternoon, May 2 as they host “Hats and Horses Day” to celebrate the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby.
The Kentucky Derby’s official beverage, the mint julep, which has been promoted in association with this annual race since 1938, is a delight definitely worth expounding upon.  A traditional mint julep contains mint leaf, bourbon, sugar and water with the mint used as a garnish to introduce flavor and aroma through the nose. While this recipe is accepted as standard, a popular variation exists where the mint is “muddled” or crushed then mixed into the drink itself to enhance flavoring.
Churchill Downs actually offers (or at least used to offer) an extra premium, custom-made, mint julep at a cost of $1,000 with all proceeds going to charities that support retired thoroughbred racers. This “grand” libation is served in a gold-plated goblet and features Woodford Reserve bourbon, imported Irish mint, spring water ice cubes from the Bavarian Alps, Australian sugar and a sterling silver straw.
This Saturday, in keeping with the grand tradition of the Derby, the Broad Channel VFW will be celebrating “Hats and Horses Day” and offering it’s very own “extra premium custom made” mint julep served in a plastic cup with Jim Beam bourbon, mint imported from the produce section of the Rockaway Waldbaum’s, New York City tap water ice cubes, Domino sugar and a plastic straw!  The cost will be substantially less than the $1.000 being charged at Churchill Downs but all proceeds will go to fund the VFW’s services for our disabled vets.
Danny Ruscillo wants to remind all of us that “Our Police Officers put their lives on the line every day” so both he and all the members of the 100th Precinct Community Council are asking all those who can to join with them in commemorating National Police Week with a short candle light (or flashlight) vigil in front of the 100th Precinct on Wednesday evening, May 13, from 8:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
It is with a heavy heart that we extend our sincere sympathy to our neighbor Gloria Tubridy on the recent loss of a long time friend…her dog, Taxi. Someone once said that the one absolutely unselfish friend that anyone can have in this selfish world, the one friend that will never desert them, the one friend that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is their dog. Truer words were never spoken.
Before I go I would like to take this opportunity to wish my two “Irish Twins,” Amy and Victoria very happy birthdays!  Vicky turned 19 on April 23 and Amy turned 20 the following day, April 24.  The day my second daughter (Vicky) was born, 364 days to the day after her older sister, I asked my mother who was in her late 70’s at the time if she had any advice for me.  Her simple response to me was “You’re not the sharpest knife in the drawer but you obviously have a grand sense of humor, you’ll be fine!”  She was right!
Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?

Message from Danny Ruscillo, 100th Pct. Community Council

I have become aware of “National Police Week in Washington, DC which is a week-long reflection on Police Officers who have fallen in the line of duty for 2014. We also cannot neglect to honor those Police Officers who gave their lives in 2015 especially the recent Police Officer Brian Moore.

Weekly Construction Schedule (April 27th - May 1st, 2015)

Broad Channel Bits (WAVE)

By Dan Guarino

Of course, the one bright, sunny morning we had this week came out for the BCAC’s Opening Day Parade and ceremonies. On Saturday, April 18, the Broad Channel Athletic Club celebrated their 20th consecutive annual parade. Even after Hurricane Sandy hit parents, families and players came out and proudly marched.
Like many other events in BC, more than being a great time (which it is), it really speaks to the character of this town. You want to explain to someone what Broad Channel is like? Take them to a BCAC opening day. There will be pictures and more elsewhere in this paper. But in the meantime, a special mention goes out to the PS 47 Chorus for a great rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” and Liz Sorrentino, who knocked it out of the park with an acapella “America The Beautiful.” A special salute is owed to the officers of the 100th Precinct, led by Lieutenant Roland Kitchen, who marched as this year’s special grand marshals, and to longtime BCAC member Charlie Ledogar, who threw out the first ball. A well-deserved plaque was also presented to the CYO Girls Swim Team coaches. These ladies have led this team from just treading water to winning four consecutive championships.
I do not know that there is a ‘thank you’ big enough for all the special people who work so hard to make Broad Channel a great place. But let’s start with the hardworking parents, coaches and volunteers of the BCAC. Thank YOU for all you do.
Maybe you noticed all the new trees in the Channel. True to their word, after clearing away many of the dead and ailing trees, in short order the city put in fresh new saplings. Many are budding and some are already blooming. I admit I soaked up a lot of sun on that first bright, hot day we had. It reminded me of the amazing sunburn I managed to get years ago, while dressed in a toga. In BC. But perhaps that’s a story for another time.
Anyway, this Saturday, April 25, make plans to be at Grassy’s Bar and Grill from 7 p.m. on for a night of fun and music with 100 Proof, Wild Side and Lady Sabbath. The event is a Friend In Need benefit organized by Liz McCarthy for her sister. There will be 50/50s and raffles and your $10 admission ticket covers your first drink. Do drop in and support.
There was a very good turnout at the April 19 Relay For Life yard sale held at the BCAC Field, lots of vendors, lots of buyers and lots of interesting merchandise.
Stop by the firehouse on Noel Road this Saturday and Sunday. The BCVFD is having an open house! There will be activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. On Saturday there will be a firefighter drill and a Jaws of Life demonstration and on Sunday’s Emergency Medical Technician drill and demonstration and a car extrication drill, all between 10 and 11:30 a.m. Over the day you can meet the Volies’ members, tour the trucks and equipment and get information about volunteering. At noon there will be BBQ and refreshments served, and throughout the afternoon there will be basic first aid demonstrations and blood pressure checks.
Kids’ activities will include hose games using BCVFD fire hoses from a working fire engine and bouncy rides for the little ones from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. Oh, they’re organizing a magic show, too. Details to be announced. The open house is part of Fireman’s Association of the state’s Recruit NY drive. It’s a good time to find out how you can become a volunteer firefighter, EMT or fire alarm dispatcher right here in BC. There are lots of ways you can help. Come and find out how.
Before the South Channel Bridge was completed in 1939, NYC firefighting equipment and firefighters had to come by barge to respond to fires. The South and North Channel bridges, later replaced, were draw bridges and built low to the water. They opened often and stopped even emergency traffic from going through.
Want to hear more? There is a lot of great history about the BCVFD and about Broad Channel at the Broad Channel Volunteers (BCVFD) Facebook page.
There’s an Earth Day shoreline clean up on Sunday, April 26, from 11 to 2 p.m. Meet at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Bring gloves and wear boots.
Thanks, Pete Mahon. Now I know I have Billy Bowden to thank for the great garbage omelets at the VFW brunches.
Turn out in your best for Hats And Horses Day At The VFW! The Post, at 713 Shad Creek Road, is celebrating the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby from noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. Stroll through the wide green backyard and enjoy the day with refreshments and drinks and of course the excitement of the race. It will be shown on wide screen TVs in the Post Canteen.
Ladies, come out in your best Derby Day hats, the more ostentatious the better.
Get ready for Broad Channel’s 25th annual Spring Planting and Adopt-A-Tree event on Saturday, May 9, 10 a.m. Bring gloves and gardening tools to the median on Cross Bay Boulevard to clean, spruce up, dig, weed, garden, plant and beautify the tree pits. Enjoy the fresh air, the outdoors and help make Broad Channel beautiful. Even if you’re not from Broad Channel, you are more than welcome to come down and help. Rain or shine.
Finally, April 27 would have been my late wife Liz’s birthday. The hurricane would have been very hard on her, but she would be so proud of where Broad Channel is today. She deeply loved this place.

President Bill de Blasio?

Presidential Aspirations?

Is Bill de Blasio trying to steal a page from Barack Obama’s playbook to set himself up for a Presidential run in 2016?

The New York Times reported back in September of 2014 that his trips overseas to Britain and Italy so early during his new tenure as Mayor of NYC indicated that “de Blasio, a virtual unknown not so long ago, is now determined to cultivate a profile on the international stage.”

Our Mayor also jetted off to Europe once more this past January to visit Paris shortly after the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack.

Back in November of 2014 GOP Chairman Ed Cox stated that he had become aware that Mayor de Blasio was attempting to portray himself as the leader of the urban progressive centers of the nation as part of a plan to prepare for a run at the nation’s top job.

Chairman Cox stated that “De Blasio is a man with huge national ambitions, and for those ambitions New York City is just a stepping stone.”

Cox also cited de Blasio’s remarkably close ties to the Reverend Al Sharpton and his National Action Network political machine as further evidence that Mayor Bill sees his political future far beyond that of New York City.

With Hillary Clinton's recently announced Presidential campaign not realizing the groundswell of support initially expected and the darling of the Democratic Party’s hard progressive left, Elizabeth Warren, still maintaining that she will not seek her party's nomination, rumors about de Blasio’s presidential ambitions surfaced again last week when he refused to endorse Hillary Clinton’s bid for President.

With Warren out of the picture some think that the Mayor is setting himself up as a potential “draft” progressive candidate for the 2016 democrat primary.

Reportedly, some in the party think that this “draft” effort explains why de Blasio was accompanied by a top democratic communication strategist on his recent “progressive” speech making trip to Iowa.

He also visited Nebraska and is scheduled to visit Wisconsin and Washington D.C. shortly.

Of course, when asked if he was harboring any presidential ambitions, de Blasio and his staffers maintain that such rumors are pure fantasy and that Mayor Bill's long term plans are focused solely on being re-elected Mayor of NYC in 2017.

So exactly what is our Mayor up to?

Some would say that where there is smoke, there is fire.

On the other hand there are those who maintain that they do not believe there is a "Draft de Blasio" movement anywhere out there but in the Mayor's head!

Time will tell.

Assemblyman Goldfeder Demands Justice for All Families in FEMA Fraud Cases

Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder

In a letter to FEMA, Goldfeder calls on embattled agency to apply pending class-action lawsuit to all potential Sandy engineering report fraud victims, regardless of whether suit was filed. Assemblyman also demands provisions to provide storm victims access to insurance company documents

FEMA currently facing 1,200 fraud claims in New York District Court after 60 Minutes report exposed doctored damage assessments by Write-Your-Own (WYO) insurance company-hired private engineering firms and adjusters
Goldfeder: Our families have been bled dry by Sandy
Rockaway Park, Queens – With over a thousand civil lawsuits pending in federal court following allegedly fraudulent actions by insurance company-contracted engineering firms and adjusters aimed at limiting payouts to Superstorm Sandy victims, Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder (D – Rockaway Park) wrote a letter to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Craig Fugate calling on the agency to ensure all affected Sandy flood victims are included in the ongoing settlements. The Assemblyman also called on FEMA to make insurance and damage report documents available to policyholders for possible future claims.
“Families in southern Queens and Rockaway have been bled dry trying to recover from Sandy. Many have fallen into debt from the costs of rebuilding or the process of fighting insurance claims,” said Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder. “Having to fight possible fraud on top of everything else is simply unacceptable. The least FEMA can do is ensure that all our families have access to justice if they have been victimized by these fraudulent practices.”
In a letter to FEMA Administrator Fugate, Goldfeder requested the federal agency allow Sandy victims potentially defrauded by falsified engineering reports and other questionable insurance company practices be allowed to join in the settlement currently in New York District Court, regardless of whether or not they were among the initial claims. The Assemblyman also requested the settlement include provisions allowing victims the opportunity to obtain all insurance and engineering report documents. This, Goldfeder wrote, would allow for reopening of FEMA aid claims to review possible fraud or underpayments for damages sustained during the 2012 storm.

Currently, FEMA and its National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is in the process of settling 1,200 civil lawsuits filed by Sandy victims pending in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. The suits stem from alleged fraudulent practices by engineering firms and adjusters contracted by Write-Your-Own (WYO) insurance companies that sought to reduce aid payouts to families by doctoring damage reports. The scandal came to national attention following a recent high-profile report on 60 minutes into the insurance companies, which are overseen by FEMA and the NFIP.

Assemblyman Goldfeder has made fighting Sandy insurance company practices a priority since instances of alleged fraud and other policyholder issues first came to light following Sandy. Goldfeder, a member of the Assembly Committee on Insurance, recently introduced legislation to create the New York Flood Insurance Association. The Assemblyman’s plan would create a joint underwriters association requiring insurance providers operating in New York State to follow fair practices and pool earnings from issuing premiums in an effort to hold insurers accountable during major disasters.

“FEMA and the NFIP failed our families when we most needed them most,” concluded Assemblyman Goldfeder. “These small steps can help right the wrong for our devastated communities.”

Broad Channel Bits

By Dan Guarino
Look up, Broad Channel; you never know when the sun might be coming out. And if it doesn’t, well, we’re just moving ahead anyway.
This weekend marks a big day in the BC year. On Saturday morning, April 18, parents, families, friends, neighbors, siblings and Broad Channel Athletic Club players large and small will begin assembling at17th Road Park for the BCAC Opening Day Parade.
At 9:30 a.m., they will begin, with rows and rows of colorful uniforms, strollers and wagons in tow, with juice boxes and coffee cups very much in evidence, and march en masse northward onto Cross Bay Boulevard.
There is nothing like this good-natured crowd, and nothing like seeing hundreds of people, from Broad Channel and beyond, joining together and being together like this. It feels like the whole town has come out, either to march with these youngsters or cheer them on.
I remember a year or two ago watching workmen up on Sandy damaged roofs stopping, watching and waving!
For this 20th consecutive parade, the grand marshals will be the men and women of the 100th Precinct. Leading BC’s special guests will be their commanding officer Captain Craig Adelman. The procession, which stretches for blocks, end off at the BCAC Memorial Field. There will be Opening Day ceremonies, games for each of the teams and hot dogs and soda. It’s a very happy event.
There will also be a very special guest on hand to throw out the first pitch. ‘Mr. BCAC’ Charlie Ledogar will do just that and officially open the 2015 season.
As the BCAC noted Charlie “has been the foundation of the club since the 1970s. He is the ultimate member of the BCAC. His years of service to our community can never be matched and the BCAC is what it is today because of Charlie. We thank him for all the years and his continued inspiration to the younger members of the club.”
Whether to march, watch or cheer on the players, come on out and enjoy the parade. It’s certainly one of those “only in Broad Channel!” kind of things.
The Relay For Life (RFL) round the clock walking event, to be held in BC, is getting closer and closer. In the meantime, many teams in Rockaway and Broad Channel are doing everything they can to raise more funds for the American Cancer Society. This Sunday, April 19, a lot of the RFL teams are banding together for a great big yard sale at the BCAC Field from 12 to 4 p.m. You probably haven’t been to a yard sale since the last time it was actually warm out, and it’s a good way to help a great cause.
Someone said to me not long ago that almost everyone has been touched by cancer or someone close to them has. If you know my story, you’d know that cancer certainly has touched my life. Twice it has completely and forever changed my world. Go, browse, buy some things, enjoy being in the sun and help others while you are doing it.
Before you go rocketing down Noel Road with bad brakes, bald tires and no seat belt on (you know, they don’t tell just everyone about the concrete wall at the end)... make sure to sign up for the 6-Hour Defensive
Driving Course. Do it now though. It will be given over Tuesday, April 21 and 28 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Springman Hall across the bridge over at St. Camillus. Completing the course will get you a three year 10 percent discount on your auto insurance and up to a four point reduction on your license. No test, refreshments will be served and your $45 payment now guarantees you a seat. Call Helen 917-553-2409 or 718-945-4648. Proceeds go to help St. Camillus’ religious instructions (CCD) program.
Plan on being at Grassy’s next Saturday night, April 25. Liz McCarthy is organizing a blowout Friend InNeed benefit for her sister. From 7 p.m. on, there will be live music from 100 Proof, Wild Side and Lady Sabbath. Plus raffles and 50/50s and the $10 admission includes your first drink. Drop in!
Coming up Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26, the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department is having an open house! There will be activities from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the firehouse on Noel Road. The schedule for each day will be: 9 a.m. introductions; meet the Volies’ members, 10:00-11:30 a.m. firefighter drill and demonstration, Jaws of Life drill on Saturday and an emergency medical technician drill and demonstration and a car extrication drill on Sunday. At noon there will be BBQ and refreshments served and remaining afternoon events will be basic first aid and BP checks and activities for the kids will include hose games using BCVFD fire hoses from a working fire engine and bouncy rides for the little ones from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. Oh, they’re organizing a magic show, too. Details to be announced. Done in conjunction the FASNY (Fireman’s Association of the State of NY), Recruit NY drive, the Volies open house will also have presentations, demonstrations and information on how you can become a volunteer firefighter, EMT or fire alarm dispatcher right here in your own town. If you have time to spare, you can help. And you don’t even have to live in BC to volunteer here.
Want to really enjoy the outdoors? There’s an Earth Day shoreline clean up on Sunday, April 26, from 11 to 2 p.m. Meet at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Bring gloves and wear boots. Call 718- 474-0896 for more information. RSVP: jamaicabayearthday.event brite.com
Oh, make a green mark on your calendar for Saturday, May 9, 10 a.m. for the Channel’s annual Spring Planting and Adopt-A-Tree Event. It’s the 25th anniversary of this community event. Watch this space for more info.
Finally, great brunch at the VFW last Sunday.

Message from the American Littoral Society - Northeast Chapter

Hi West 12th Road Block Association News:

In a (nut)seashell: American Littoral Society - Northeast Chapter -  is competing for a monetary prize and national promotion in a contest of solutions to reduce risk of extreme weather. We thought maybe you could help us with a PSA.

Our submission was based on the Jamaica Bay Marsh Restoration Initiative, which has restored 40+ acres of badly-degraded marsh islands and is ongoing with the goal to restore 80% of the bay’s marsh islands to reflect the 1974 footprint of the project area.

Over the course of the past 3 years, over 3,000 volunteers have participated in the restoration, planting over 180,000 plugs of native Jamaica Bay Spartina alterniflora on 2’ centers, and restoring 40+ acres of salt marsh. Following the volunteer events, we continue to plant as needed and monitor the sites.

Our project is unique in that it increases community resiliency to climate change by restoring salt marsh islands in Jamaica Bay through community-based stakeholder collaboration.

The benefit of restoring wetlands is priceless-- restored wetlands increase coastal buffers mitigating waves, wind, tides and floods in the bay and reduce the risk of damages to surrounding neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens.

Voting link: http://www.solutionsearch.org/entityform/117. Votes can be cast once a day per device. Voting ends May 15th.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Best,
Theresa Crupi
Restoration Assistant

Between the Bridges [in Broad Channel]

Between The Bridges

If last Sunday’s spectacular spring weather was any indication, it looks as though Old Man Winter has finally packed up his cold and snow and left town for good.  It was great to see dozens of young children and their parents enjoying the warm sunshine at the Gene Gray Playground on 9th Road.  For those of you who may not be aware, this playground is named in honor of Broad Channel community activist Eugene Gray (1927-1973). Gray was born on March 14, 1927 in Park Slope, Brooklyn and later moved to Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan. After attending college, Gray married Lorraine Baker (1929-1977) with whom he had three children: Michael, Gary and Gregory. Gray later moved to Broad Channel and became involved in various neighborhood youth programs, including the Broad Channel Athletic Club, an organization for which he served as president. A community football coach for more than 20 years, Gray also helped to shape and maintain the Broad Channel football league and assisted in the creation of the local Teen Club, which provided safe recreational activities for the area’s youth.
Speaking of the Gene Gray Playground, last week I noticed some very crude graffiti spray-painted on one of the columns of the long unfinished building located at 818 Cross Bay Boulevard directly across from the playground used by our children. Graffiti is not something to be ignored or taken for granted. All of us should be keenly aware that graffiti affects property values, quality of life, and serves to diminish the viability of our community. When graffiti is allowed to remain, it invites more graffiti and can lead to an increase in vandalism and other criminal activity. It must never be tolerated. That said, many thanks to whoever it was that quickly addressed this issue by painting over the crude and offensive graffiti.
This past Sunday’s brunch up at the Broad Channel VFW Post 260 was a great success thanks to the men and women of the post who were busy scurrying around the packed hall taking orders, cooking meals, and delivering them to the many hungry residents who attended the event. The complimentary Bloody Marys were also out of this world!  A special shout out to Billy Bowden whose “garbage omelets” put Bobby Flay to shame!  If you happened to miss Sunday’s brunch, worry not. Things went so well that the VFW is doing it again with another brunch presently scheduled for Sunday, May 17th.
Sadly, two of our neighbors and VFW auxiliary members were unable to attend the brunch. Lauren and Bob Prokopowicz both suffered tremendous personal losses this past week. Lauren lost her mother after a long illness while her husband Rob had to deal with the unexpected passing of his sister. Words cannot express the sadness we feel for their losses but the collective thoughts of their friends and neighbors in Broad Channel are with them in this time of sorrow in the hope that they may both find comfort in the loving memories of their lost family members.
As you are strolling about town this week, keep an eye out for the brand new Rockaway Timesnews rack on the sidewalk outside of the Broad Channel All American Channel Market.
As always, the St. Virgilius Golden Age Club meets every Thursday at the American Legion Hall in Broad Channel at 12:30 pm.
Broad Channel, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?
